Scout Trip Day 1

1–2 minutes

Its Saturday and 8 scouts, 2 other adult leaders and myself are heading up to Matagamon High Adventure Base Camp in Maine. Its the start of a week long adventure into the back country of Maine on canoes. As I’m writing this in advance, I have no idea where we will be going yet, the scouts don’t either. All I do know is that when we get there, they will bring the scouts into a room with a big map and the scouts will begin planning our trip, the adults merely along for the ride. In total, we will be on the water in the back country for 7 days. We have done all the preparation we can; completed swim tests, hiked with our backpacks, flipped canoes in a lake and got them upright again, and worked to set up tents in pairs while blindfolded. The planning for this trip started over 6 months ago and we are on the cusp of our adventure. I can’t wait to see the scouts succeed and flourish, rain or shine, and create memories that I am sure will last a lifetime. I will be journaling the entire time and can’t wait to write about our experiences upon returning. For now and the next week, all posts here will be speculative and theoretical. We will see how my theories pan and we will see what the weather has in store for us. The only thing I do know is that the water will be cold!
