There is a big mistake that people make in their mindset about work. A lot of people I know are slaves to their jobs and live to work. They spend most of their waking hours concerned with work, keeping it front of mind and letting life pass them by. It’s either that mindset or the one in which they are working hard now so they can live and travel when they retire. That is a grave misconception as by the time most people retire, they are failing in health and mobility and lack the drive and energy to travel like they wished they could. My grandparents thought they would be able to travel extensively after retirement, but due to health issues, they couldn’t. I choose the alternative, to work to live, meaning I place most of my emphasis on family, travel, and life. That isn’t to say I ignore work, but even though I own my own business, I give it just enough energy to keep it going and to allow me to enjoy life as I age.
Don’t waste the time you have now. Take the vacation, travel, spend more time with your family, you won’t regret doing those things. However, you may regret not doing those things if you place all your emphasis on work, your career, and all that comes with it. You only have one life to live, why waste the precious moments on a career or job when those people won’t remember your effort. Your family will remember those moments you left work early to spend time with them, or that extra vacation you squeezed in even if it was close to home. Those are the moments you will regret not partaking in if you focus on work. So if you are one of those who live to work, why not try flipping the mindset to working to live and see how much more you can get out of life?
