In the midst of lingering back pain that won’t seem to leave me alone and move on its way, there is a storm brewing, moving towards the North East region of the United States. Ironic maybe, the storm of pain in my back as a physical storm moves in for the weekend, but for now, I’ll focus on the incoming storm. For the past few days, we have had increasing winds whipping down from the North East (hence the name, Nor’Easter), and I couldn’t be happier. There is nothing better to me than an autumn storm with windy days leading up to it. Everything seems more alive when the wind is whipping around; trees sing their whistling songs, leaves rattle as they glide and collide along the ground, bushes bristle, and the long fingers of the wind penetrate through every layer of clothing. There is nothing quite like storm winds to make one feel alive. It is exhilarating and humbling at the same time. To feel this massive storm casting tentacles of wind days in advance of its impending landfall is incredible.
We are all such small cogs in this massive wheel of life, and nature’s forces, when brought to bear on us, have the ability to put us in our place, make us feel how small we actually are, and how vulnerable we can be. I love it. To hear the first wind swept patter of rain as it begins is to feel a goliath shoving its way over, through, and all around us. We haven’t had a good nor’easter in a while, and I welcome its advance. To know that with a gust of wind it could take down a massive oak that is just a little off balance is humbling. I say bring it on. As the wind and rain whip through, I will most likely sit and watch through the window the melee that will occur outside. Batten down the hatches and get ready for the show. We have a storm brewing and I for one, can not wait.
